■ Eastern Kentucky University faculty member Robert Frederick has been awarded the 2015 Lauren E. Schaaf Memorial Award.
Frederick, chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, received the award from the Kentucky chapter of The Wildlife Society. The award recognizes a professional biologist in Kentucky who has made outstanding contributions to wildlife conservation and management.
It is named in honor of Lauren E. Schaaf, wildlife biologist and director of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, who passed away in 1995. Like Frederick, Schaaf was a waterfowl biologist.
Frederick has conducted field-based research throughout the United States, focusing on the population and behavioral ecology of waterfowl and fur bearers.
■ U.S. News & World Report released its annual list of Best Regional Colleges recently. Of the 98 institutions profiled from the South, Kentucky Wesleyan College checked in at No. 27, a 13 percent improvement over last year. Wesleyan out-performed all but one other school in the Commonwealth (Asbury University at No. 3), and enjoyed the highest ranking for schools in the western part of the state.
Other Kentucky schools appearing in the rankings include Asbury (3rd), Alice Lloyd College (30th), Brescia University (50th), Midway College (54th), and Kentucky Christian University (58th). A complete list of rankings can be found at Usnews.com/bestcolleges.
■ Kentucky Community and Technical College System Chancellor Emeritus Keith Bird will serve as interim president of Gateway Community and Technical College beginning Thursday. Mark Baker has been named administrator in charge until Bird begins.
Bird served as the first chancellor of KCTCS and was named chancellor emeritus when he retired in 2009. Most recently he has been serving as Senior Policy Fellow for Workforce and Postsecondary Education at Corporation for a Skilled Workforce in Ann Arbor, Mich.
■ Timothy Forde has been named director of the African/African-American Studies Program at Eastern Kentucky University.
Before his appointment, he was a faculty member in the School of Clinical Educator Preparation in EKU's College of Education.
Forde has spent the past 10 years teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on the latest emerging instructional technologies.
