Projects

Projects

Our on-going projects usually fall into three main groups, and are designed to reinforce and support one another to be as effective as possible:
  • Construction
  • Learning
  • Income generation

Projects

 Construction

While not all CLI construction projects target schools, we do work to improve the limited formal education system in Laos by building schools, libraries, sanitation facilities, and dormitories (primarily for girls – so they have a safe place to sleep near school, as they currently travel far and sleep in makeshift shelters they build themselves). We also build the ever popular and successful Learning Centers (LCs).

Learning

Lao Children’s Library Boat - One of CLI’s most exciting programs is the Lao Children’s Library Boat, or simply put, the Book Boat. There are two CLI “book boats” taking Lao language books to villages along the Mekong River and its tributaries. The boats serve disadvantaged children in more than 100 riverside villages, who otherwise would never have books in their hands. Our boat staff also teach life skills classes and learning activities.
Learning Centers - CLI currently operates five fully-fledged Learning Centers (LC) in the District Towns of five rural Luang Prabang districts. We also have a small LC project in a sixth district, but as yet no LC building and so that location awaits construction funding so we can ramp up the activity.

Income Generation

While education for children is CLI’s primary focus, because we believe that ultimately is the strongest foundation for ending poverty, CLI has developed two family income projects that have a more immediate impact on family circumstances; they are weaving and coffee growing.
